SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS . . .

Instrument & Controls Engineer – NuScale NRC Liscensing Effort

Control Systems Engineer at a nuclear start-up company involved in review of newly created P&ID’s and written Functional Specifications insuring adherance to 10 CFR 50 App. A & B, NUREG 0700, and applicable chapters of EPRI URD and IEEE.

Lead Control Systems Engineer – Hunt Refinery Capital Projects,  Gaylord Chemical Corp, Chevron  Oronite

Lead Engineer for numerous small capital projects for Hunt Refinery located in Tuscaloosa, AL. encompassing all aspects of instrumentation and electrical design. Wrote procedure, specified and requisitioned all instrumentation equipment. Designed and monitored installation of all necessary electrical equipment.

Gaylord Chemical Specified instrumentation  and  managed all design and drawing production for a unit expansion. Directed required modifications to an existing Honeywell TDC3000 DCS system and guided construction effort. Project included coordinating recycling effort to reuse unused instrumentation and including it in the new unit design.

Chevron Oronite supervised production of design packages to install VFD’s, large HP motors, various instruments and  interfaces with DCS and PLC systems.

CDI Corporation – Baton Rouge, Louisiana – Fall 2005 to Dec 2009

Lead Control Systems Engineer –  IMTT Grass Roots Tank Farm , Chevron Refinery and DOW projects

Lead Instrument Engineer. Grass roots tank farm facility (IMTT), (190M$). Oversaw instrument specification, advised client on control devices/control implementation. Wrote DCS and other functional specifications (Foxboro I/A system). Implemented cost saving ideas from personal experience base to reduce installed costs, E.G. provided the client greater flexibility for truck and rail loading functions at lower cost. Liaison between client and vendors. SIL level design, project status reports and coordinated US office and Mexico office project efforts. Chevron client, Specified instruments and configured PLC’s for several small projects including alarm panels, pump controls and tank car loading overflow prevention. Designed instrument insertion system to facilitate tank car level measurement. DOW client Instrument specifications and instrument engineering for all in-line instruments relating to capital projects handled by CDI/BR office for DOW client (Saint Charles Operations).

E.I. DUPONT – Beaumont, Texas – Fall 2002 to Fall 2005

Control Systems Engineer/ PLC Specialist – Various Projects

CS Engineer and PLC Specialist for all new site PLC installations.  Allen-Bradley PLC5 and SLC-500 equipment with RSLogix Software. Specified all PLC equipment for site, created and configured programs and commissioned all new PLC systems for site. Developed complex control strategies (PID, Cascade, etc.) using PLC equipment for many new projects including product steam heater control, plant air compressor control, safety system monitoring, boiler feed water pump control, data gathering/monitoring and plantwide emergency monitoring network. Interfaced with existing plant data network (SCADA) and local networks using A/B DF-1, DH+, DH-485, RIO protocols as required. Developed all new HMI operator control screens using WonderWare and RSView32 software development tools.  Participated in project PSA’s.

Field Service Engineering – Various Projects

Field Service Engineer participating in several system F.A.T. tests for CALPINE and DYNERGY clients. Programmed combined cycle turbine generator monitoring equipment and effected TXP database changes. Troubleshot problems and implemented required design changes at the Atlanta assembly plant and at client jobsites (Texas and Michigan).

Siemens/International Navistar Robotic Assembly Project

Controls Engineer /PLC Programmer on a project for automated assembly of fuel injectors for diesel engines. Developed and implemented logic for robotic assembly lines using Siemens Step 7 software (typical assembly line routines, E.G. register bit shifts, position verification, test accept/reject). Also programmed robotic movements and precision locations of custom scissors style equipment and grippers using Wheaton DSP servo drive controllers with remote handheld (UNIOP ePalm10 pendant) devices. Also performed troubleshooting and debugging duties.

Petrobras Gas Plant Phase II Commissioning

Commissioning specialist on a gas plant expansion instrumentation control system commissioning effort. Control equipment was Allen-Bradley w/ControlNet. Assisted in troubleshooting system networking problems and led a team of South American technicians in commissioning activities for approximately 600 field devices. Troubleshot problems relative to any non-functioning equipment and directed repairs as required. Interacted in basic Spanish.

BIOPORT PHARMACEUTICALS – Lansing, Michigan – Spring/Summer 2001

VISIBAR Database Validation

Computer Validation Specialist. Assisted in the Validation of several Databases and computer servers relative to the production of anthrax vaccine. Wrote test protocols and executed validation tests to assure conformance of computer equipment and software with FDA 21CFR, part.11. Emphasis on IQ, OQ and CQ. Assisted FDA compliance officer during tests. Followed up on any deviations and wrote addendum’s.

Calpine – Baytown Combined Cycle Turbine Control Systems Test

Commissioning Specialist required to test control equipment for a Combined Cycle Turbine Driver. System was UNIX based SIEMENS ES680 workstation forward to SIEMENS TXP and S7 PLC control equipment. Assisted in system setup using PG equipment and supervised F.A.T. for approval by client. Configured card rack network addressing and trouble shot PROFIBUS communications and all I/O card problems.

MALLINKCRODT CHEMICALS – St. Louis, Missouri – Spring/Summer 2000 to Fall 2000

ASI (bldg 504) IVERSOL Project.

Control Systems Specialist on a pharmaceutical plant project. Implemented project design for conversion of existing unit control from Rosemount RS3 system to a Fisher Delta ’V’ control system. Assisted in commissioning effort of loops. Maintained FDA required records for installation (IQ) and calibration (CQ). Set-up and commissioning of various systems such as ABB VFD’s, pH meters, ozone generators and UV type bacteria destruction devices in a high purity water operation.

Farmland/Texaco joint venture Coke Gasification Project Implementation

CS Engineer. Supervised night shift loop validation efforts (achieved 75% of dayshift’s production rate with 80% less personnel). Control system was a HONEYWELL TPS SYSTEM (TDC3000). Implemented configuration changes to the DCS system and Allen-Bradley PLC’s. Coordinated troubleshooting and assisted in training new operators.

M/D TOTCO INC. – Austin, Texas – Apr 1999 to Aug 1999

Galaxy III and Peregrine IV Offshore Drilling Projects

I & E Engineer. Supervised the completion of two partially done project packages for offshore drilling rig control houses. Control equipment was SIEMENS S7 with PROFIBUS communications protocol and SCADA philosophy. Designs included electrical and control wiring for drilling functions and communications network fiber optics with associated optical link modules (FDDI), also RG59 coax video links for cameras located around the rig. Assisted field technicians with troubleshooting support.

STYROCHEM INTERNATIONAL –  Fort Worth, Texas  –  1996 to  Apr 1999

IWT Water Project

I & E Project Manager on grass roots water treatment project. Specified all instrumentation, valving, electrical and MCC equipment. Wrote premise of bid and did estimates for I&E disciplines. Helped develop control strategy for the unit, specified all computer equipment required, designed unit graphics and assisted in development of HMI graphics using ALLEN-BRADLEY RSVIEW software. Wrote SOP for several systems. Supervised commissioning and start-up.

*This project was installed for 18% less than budget estimate!

Dyno 100 Project

Project Manager on a research & development reactor project. Specified instrument equipment (valves, meters, switches etc.) and designed piping installation. Detailed configuration requirements w/contractor for HONEYWELL PLANTSCAPE MICRO DCS system. Wrote SOP for unit procedures and new equipment use. Redesigned foreign equipment to meet client’s unique process requirements. Supervised multi-contractor construction effort and unit start-up including loop tuning, configuration modifications and troubleshooting. *This project met project estimate!
