Drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) announced another round of layoffs Monday, this time affecting 180 workers in North Carolina.

The affected positions are in sales, marketing, operations and other managerial, technical and support roles, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification – WARN notice – filed with the N.C. Department of Commerce.

Just last week, GSK announced 150 layoffs in Pennsylvania. Last year, GSK announced plans to lay off 900 workers from its operations in Research Triangle Park, though a significant portion of those are expected to find work with Parexel, (Nasdaq: PRXL) a pharmaceutical research organization with major operations in Durham.

β€œThe restructuring is intended to improve operational performance and contribute to a multiyear cost savings initiative across our commercial operations, global support functions as well as the R&D (research and development) and manufacturing facilities,” according to the WARN notice signed by Lisa Benna, GSK vice president of Human Resources, Pharma.

Affected employees will be offered severance, though the WARN did not go into detail.
